Some of the icons listed above are done meanwhile. Can't edit @janus text, so here's the updated list of missing icons:

Hello Everyone,
I am very much interested in contributing to Haiku.

Can I take this issue and start working on this?

scottmc commented Jan 9, 2018

Yes you may. Your icon will need to fit in with the look of the test of the current set of icons and you will need to use icon-o-matic to make then. If you have any questions, just ask.

Or icons...

Okay
Thank You! @scottmc

Can I ask my doubts here itself?

scottmc commented Jan 9, 2018

Yes. Also are you a Google Code In student or just interested in helping in general? If Code-In student I think there is a task for this you can claim. Either way let us know which icon(s) you plan on working on.

No, I am not a GCI student.
I am a Sophomore from Amrita University. 😄

Welcome @vchrombie !
If you have general questions about Haiku icons and using Icon-O-Matic, consider posting on the Haiku webforums at https://discuss.haiku-os.org/
You'll find more people reading/helping and others may profit from it too.

I think the list should be updated again.
So, that I will start working on the remaining icons.

Nothing has changed, the same icons are still missing compared to my comment of Nov 16, 2017. There are conditions that are very similarly named, like "mixed snow and rain" (exists) and "mixed rain and sleet" and "mixed snow and sleet" (both missing).

Best check the Artwork folder after cloning the repo before working on an icon.

Yeah, I cloned the Weather App and I saw the Artwork folder.
But, freezin rain seems similar to that of mixed snow and rain. Can I do anything to make them differ?

Also, icons like mostly cloudy (night) is already there in the repository.

Freezing rain is something different

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freezing_rain

So, it is basically rain, but it will freeze when reaching the ground. So there should not be snowflakes on the icon. Maybe we could attempt to draw glaze?

@vchrombie
Copy link

Thank You @pulkomandy and @humdingerb for letting me know the things.

Where should I draw the glaze? Should I make it on the ground?

@pulkomandy

This is where your artistic freedom is needed :)

It may be difficult to draw identifiable glaze on the ground, so maybe on a tree branch or something similar?

Thank You @pulkomandy
I will give a try to that.

Can you review these ideas?
isolated thunderstorms -> thunder with some clouds
heavy snow -> clouds with five snowflakes (somewhat similar to weather-snow)

Ideas:

  • freezing rain|drizzle could have a plane with icicles underneath the raining/drizzling cloud.
  • isolated thunderstorms like thunder, with two small flashes (see severe_thunderstorm).
  • _isolated thundershowers like severe_thunderstorm without flashes.
  • "sleet" could be small round 'drops', maybe more white than blue.

heavy snow -> clouds with five snowflakes (somewhat similar to weather-snow)

+1

You're right about the mostl cloudy. I'll update the list (in my old comment)

Got working on the hurricane (same thing as tropical storm, except that there are now lightning bolts, a flooded island, and leaves flying away)
I think I can also do heavy snow, scattered snow showers, and snow showers.

Is the fallback icon for "smoky" the sun? Because I keep seeing all these San Francisco weather screenshots and they are showing it to be sunny, but it's currently smoky...

@scottmc did you see the label smoky? Because smoky doesn't have an icon. You shouldn't see the sun icon or any icons at all.

I can design some icons for Smokey, Windy, and Tornado. Is it good or is there anything else more important than these?

@scottmc

scottmc commented Nov 27, 2018

Those will work

@humdingerb

Not a native speaker, so there might be other meanings here...
Smoke is particles in air, fog is drops in air. Now what's the diff between fog and mist... :)
We'd also need a better fog icon. Smoky could be like a better fog just more brownish, I suppose.

scottmc commented Nov 27, 2018

Smoky, foggy, and Dusty might all look similar, just different colors. Smoky would be a bit grey, fog more white, dust more tan.

@nexus6-haiku if you run into any missing icons please add a list here. This can serve as a target list for those who want to try making the missing icons.

Currently the icons used by Weather are quite messy as they are leftovers from previous providers. I'm working with ZuMi on a revamped set of icons that better fit WSO codes used by Open Meteo. When we are ready we can archive or even delete the old ones for good.

@humdingerb

Hope you and zuMi keep a similar style. I've read comments that praise Weather's icons and almost generations of GCI students added to them over the years... :)
