Can't cancel subscriptions on a deactivated channel

if the channel is deactivated, can we not/should we not deactivate the subscription automatically, rather than risk charging people for months of subscription for a channel that no longer exists?

I'm nervous to do something like automatically cancel all subs mainly because you could lose all of your income overnight if you made a mistake, or rashly decided to shut down your channel in a state of weakness.
