Publishing

MC Terra components use JFrog Artifactory to publish libraries to a central Maven repository. The library version number is the version in build.gradle. We use github actions to bumping version and publish to repository.

The publishing procedure is:

  1. After PR is merged to develop branch: github action automatically bumped the minor version in build.gradle then publish to lib-snapshot-local
  2. After release is created(usually a manual step): github action automatically bumped the minor version in build.gradle then publish to lib-snapshot-release.
  3. To bump major version, we need manually update version in build.gradle value first then create the release.

Development

Database Configuration

Terra Common Lib includes functionality using Stairway. Some of the TCL unit tests therefore rely on a running SQL instance to run Stairway. There are two recommended ways to set up a local Postgres Database for the unit tests.

Option A: Docker Postgres

Running the Postgres Container

To start a postgres container configured with the necessary databases:

./local-dev/run_postgres.sh start

To stop the container:

./local-dev/run_postgres.sh stop

Note that the contents of the database is not saved between container runs.

Connecting to the Postgres Container

Use psql to connect to databases within the started database container, e.g. for database tclstairway users tclstairwayuser with password tclstairwaypwd:

PGPASSWORD=tclstairwaypwd psql postgresql://127.0.0.1:5432/tclstairway -U tclstairwayuser

Option B: Local Postgres

Set up a local Postgres instance. To set up TCL's required database for unit tests, run the following command, which will create the DB's and users:

psql -f local-dev/local-postgres-init.sql

Local testing

When working on a TCL package, it is often helpful to be able to quickly test out changes in the context of a service repo (e.g. terra-workspace-manager or terra-resource-buffer) running a local server.

Gradle makes this very easy with a mavenLocal target for publishing and loading packages:

  1. Publish from TCL to your machine's local Maven cache.

    ./gradlew publishToMavenLocal
    

    Your package will be in ~/.m2/repository.

  2. From the service repo, add mavenLocal() to the first repository location build.gradle file (e.g. before mavenCentral().

That's it! Your service should pick up locally-published changes. If your changes involved bumping a minor version of a TCL package, be careful to update version numbers accordingly.

SourceClear

SourceClear is a static analysis tool that scans a project's Java dependencies for known vulnerabilities. If you are working on addressing dependency vulnerabilities in response to a SourceClear finding, you may want to run a scan off of a feature branch and/or local code.

Github Action

You can trigger TCL's SCA scan on demand via its Github Action, and optionally specify a Github ref (branch, tag, or SHA) to check out from the repo to scan. By default, the scan is run off of TCL's develop branch.

High-level results are outputted in the Github Actions run.

Running Locally

You will need to get the API token from Vault before running the Gradle srcclr task.

High-level results are outputted to the terminal.

Veracode

Full results including dependency graphs are uploaded to Veracode (if running off of a feature branch, navigate to Project Details > Selected Branch > Change to select your feature branch). You can request a Veracode account to view full results from #dsp-infosec-champions.
