Administrator of the California DMV. The panel focused on how state and local
governments can best interact with federal officials to keep consumers safe
without stifling innovation as autonomous cars emerge on the roads. Kenner
shared that the District is eager to find out if autonomous vehicles could
solve issues in D.C. such as improving traffic conditions, reducing traffic
fatalities and providing transportation options in underserved areas,
especially as our population continues to grow. Stay tuned for more to come on
the District’s work on autonomous driver technologies.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 5-8, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Starship Technologies announced that the District of Columbia is the pilot city for autonomous food delivery bots. The company, formed in 2014 by Janus Friis and Ahti Heinla, two Skype cofounders, aims to revolutionize the local food delivery sector and bring the cost of delivery to $1 or less. Seen here Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner and Director of Business Development and Strategy Karima Woods checking out the food bot technology with the founders. Each robot can carry up to 40 lbs (or about two grocery bags) and travel within a three-mile radius. The bots are in use in England, Germany and Switzerland and already covered 14,500 miles. You may see the food bots around D.C. as early as this fall.
