Cannot message to US number or Google number

I tried to register a new user with a mobile number or Google number (both standandard US number e.g., +12127654887) with:

signal-cli -u +12127654887 register
signal-cli -u +12127654887 register --voice

But I don't receive the text message or phone call. What could be wrong?

I have the same problem with Swiss phone numbers (both with a landline and mobile number). Nothing happens, no output from signal-cli, no activity on the phone.

Linking to an existing number works fine (and then performing all kinds of operations), so it does not seem to be a problem with the installation. I am using 0.7.4, BTW.

Is the register command broken? Can anyone else register a number with 0.7.4?

Trying from Signal/Android did also not work. Seems that some number ranges/providers are blacklisted?

Succeeded with a German VoIP number on the 0.6.5 Docker image.
