Doubts Allsky configuration... #2012

@pratastrocat, this is the right place for questions. Some people also ask on the Allsky Facebook page, but us developers don't view that very often. Not sure what you mean by "the view size" and "my allsky". Which page? What camera do you have? Can you attach a screenshot showing the cut-off parts? |

Hi Eric, thank you very much for answering. |

This is definitely due to your camera / lens combination, and there's nothing that software can do about it. Since lenses are circular, they produce circular images, but all camera sensors are square or rectangular. The ASI178's sensor is 7.4mm wide by 5 mm tall. According to the link you posted, your lens produces an image with a diameter of 6.4mm. So, your lens produces a circle that's TALLER than the sensor's height by 1.4mm (6.4 - 5). Hence, it's cut off at the top and bottom. The image is NOT cut off on the sides because the sensor is 7.4mm wide and the image produced by the lens is 6.4mm. Your lens has a focal length of 2.5 mm and mine is 1.5mm. FYI, here's my ASI 290MM camera with a 2.5 mm lens. The 290MM has a 5.6mm x 3.2 mm sensor - quite a bit smaller than the 178MC. Note that the image produced by my lens is wider than the sensor, so NOTHING is cut off; this also means I'm not getting all of the image. This is my test Pi so I don't care, but this would make a lousy combination for a real allsky camera. |

ok Eric,
Thank you very much for your explanations, I'll try changing the lens to
see if I get less clipping.
Thank you very much again

Here's my ASI178MC camera with a 1.5 mm lens, which produces about a
180-degree picture: Eric's 178MC <https://eccssw.com/allsky>.
Since lenses are circular, they produce circular images, but all camera
sensors are square or rectangular. The ASI178's sensor is 7.4mm wide by 5
mm tall. According to the link you posted, your lens produces an image with
a diameter of 6.4mm. So, your lens produces a circle that's TALLER than the
sensor's height by 1.4mm (6.4 - 5). Hence, it's cut off at the top and
bottom.
The image is NOT cut off on the sides because the sensor is 7.4mm wide and
the image produced by the lens is 6.4mm.
Your lens has a focal length of 2.5 mm and mine is 1.5mm.
Just like with normal camera lenses, the smaller the focal length, the
more of a "wide angle" image you get. If you want an image like mine with
nothing cut off, you'll either have to get a camera with a sensor that's
physically larger (which is expensive), or get a lens that produces a
smaller image.
FYI, here's my ASI 290MM camera with a 2.5 mm lens
<https://eccssw.com/allsky-test>. The 290MM has a 5.6mm x 3.2 mm sensor -
quite a bit smaller than the 178MC. Note that the image produced by my lens
is wider than the sensor, so NOTHING is cut off; this also means I'm not
getting all of the image. This is my test Pi so I don't care, but this
would make a lousy combination for a real allsky camera.

You may want to mention the ASI178's sensor is 7.4mm wide by 5 mm tall so
people don't have to look it up.

Hello everyone.
I don't know if this is where I should ask. Sorry if it's not the right place.
I would like to know how to insert a wind rose on the allsky image or my own watermark. Is there a script to do it? Any help will be welcome.
I would also like to reduce the view size of my allsky so that it doesn't get cut off from above and below. Any idea how this variation is done?
Thank you very much in advance.
Cheers! :)
