Looking through some draft MDE documentation recently I noticed reference to Data Readiness Levels - analogous to the 10 Technology Readiness Levels that many would be familiar with. Intrigued (and in need of a focus for my procrastination) I googled a bit and found some references that I thought might be of interest here, even if only as food for thought:
• The short 2017 paper Data Readiness levels by Neil Lawrence is an excellent read IMO. He proposed 3 classes C, B, A with nuanced sub-levels within. Key quote: "It’s difficult for us to reason about concepts when we haven’t developed a language to describe them. The idea of data readiness levels is to correct this issue and make it easier for us to reason about the state of our data"
• A 2013 document from the Nanotechnology Signature Initiative in the US presents another 7 level system with differing nomenclature but not dissimilar concepts.
• An 2021 article from a data science perspective, with some practical usage info and links to related concepts such as the "Data Readiness Report" and "Data Nutritional Labels".
As someone who has spent a career wrestling with data, and frequently been surprised at how unready it can be, these ideas are intuitively appealing. Whether they are useful, or mature enough yet to be useful, remains to be tested.
